Sgoil na Coille, Salen

Sgoil na Coille, or The Salen Wood School is tucked away in the woods along The Gaelic Alphabet Trail in the atlantic oakwoods in Salen. It is available to hire as a quirky wedding venue though is more regularly used by The Lochaber Countryside Rangers for their community outreach work with children.  The Easter egg hunts are always a family favourite and if you want to learn about whittling wooden spoons this may well be the school for you.  A great place to share a tale or two and catch up with the local pixies.

Strontian Filling Station

The Village Shop and Post Office is also home to the petrol station in Strontian.  The two self service pumps maybe have the finest view of any petrol station in Britain.  Watch out for the black duck of Strontian on Loch Sunart whilst you refuel, and if this is your first stop in Ardnamurchan, simply rejoice in the natural beauty and tranquility of the surrounds.

Cafe Sunart

Relax with a cup of coffee in Cafe Sunart after a walk in The Strontian Community Woodland or a walk on the Fairies Road to Ariundle Oakwoods. This friendly small cafe in the centre of Strontian serves a wide range of meals and refreshing drinks. A well as a comfortable indoor area, Cafe Sunart has a small terrace outside from where you can watch the wee world of Strontian tick by.

A great spot to grab a cooked breakfast if you are camping nearby and a favourite with locals for lunch and teas.

With panoramic views across Loch Sunart and with Three AA Rosettes your are assured a memorable dining experience at The Kilcamb Lodge Hotel and Restaurant. The menu is inspired by the wild beauty of Loch Sunart using the very best locally sourced produce. You can chose to dine in the A la carte restaurant or the informal Driftwood Brassiere. Lunch options in the Brasserie are more simple than dinner and include sandwiches, fish and chips and a special two course menu.

Afternoon teas and Sunday lunches are also popular options for locals and visitors alike.

The Bothy Bar and Restaurant at the Strontian Hotel

Strontian is famous as the village which gives its name to the element Strontium which was discovered in the hills above. The Strontian Hotel which dates back to the early 19th Century was the former mine mangers house now houses The Bothy Bar and Restaurant as well as the hotel. You can enjoy a bar snack in the informal and dog friendly Bothy Bar enjoying some wonderful views over Loch Sunart from the picture windows or dine in the more formal restaurant in the evenings. The menu includes a range of local produce and includes vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options.

The Ariundle Centre

The Ariundle Centre is open all day for breakfasts, coffees and teas, light lunches and evening meals. Home baking is a speciality in this craft orientated centre and there is a daily selection of fresh cakes available to eat in and takeaway. Ideally located for an afternoon tea after going for a wander in the nearby Atlantic Oakwood at Ariundle, a National Nature Reserve, or a spot of breakfast if you are camping nearby. The Ariundle centre has a licensed bar and is a great place to relax or enjoy a candle lit dinner.

Sunart Camping

Set in the village of Strontian The Sunart Camping Site is just a short walk away from village facilities including shop, hotel/bar, post office, restaurant and cafe. The Sunart Camping site is an ideal base from which to explore the wonders of Sunart including The Atlantic Oakwoods at Ariundle,The old Strontian mines, Loch Shiel at Polloch and Loch Sunart as well as the wildlife wonders of Ardnamurchan, Moidart and Morvern.

Strontian Village Green

Strontian is a lovely picturesque village on the shores of Loch Sunart, with a vibrant community centred around a large village green. There are several shops in Strontian including a village store, post office, craft shops and a tourism information centre. There is also a cafe with sit in and take away service as well as public toilets.

Sailean nan Cuileag

As you drive from Salen to Resipole and Strontian on the A861 you pass by the small Forestry Commission car park for Sailean nan Cuileag (The Bay of Flies). Stop off here for a lovely short walk through Atlantic oak woodland down to the shores of Loch Sunart. Look out for the wooden mushrooms on the shoreline, studded with 'wishing coins'. Take time to explore the coastline and salt marsh at low tide looking out for otters feeding on the rocks.
