Maps and Guides

There are few roads in Ardnamurchan, but many opportunities to walk in the lowlands, into the wilderness and up gentle hills and corbetts. A good map and a walking guide really open up your opportunities to explore the area and visit those 'secret' wee places that you will love for ever once visited.

Ordnance Survey maps

We recommend The Landranger and Explorer ranges from The Ordnance Survey. Both series come in paper and rouged, waterproof laminated 'Active' formats and are suitable for both walking and touring. The Landranger series is 1:50,000 Scale and gives a good overview of the area being ideal for planning daytrips, tours, cycle routes and straightforward walks. The Explorer series provides more detail at a 1:25,000 scale and is really essential if going for a walk into the wilds of Ardnamurchan. Both series also come with a code which allows you to download a copy of the map to your mobile device.

Ardnamurchan is covered by both Explorer and Landranger maps. The OS Explorer Map 390 Ardnamurchan, Moidart, Sunart and Loch Shiel is our top pick for Ardnamurchan as it covers most of the peninsula and parts of Sunart and Moidart including Castle Tioram, Glenuig and the walks at Polloch.

Ardnamurchan is not covered by a single Landranger map so you will need to consult several to cover the entire peninsula. Landranger (47) Tobermory & North Mull is a useful map to have as it covers North Mull and West Ardnamurchan, especially if you are planning a day trip to The Isle of Mull. Another popular pick from the Landranger series is OS Landranger - 40 - Mallaig & Glenfinnan, Loch Shiel as this map covers most of Moidart and The Road to The Isles. If you are holidaying in the Acharacle area you will find this useful planning trips to the Mallaig area - a top tip would be to visit the beach at Camusdarach, made famous as Ben's Beach in the film Local Hero.

Walking guides and guide books

There are many walks in the Ardnamurchan area. Whilst we feature a Top Ten listing of our favourite walks there are many other listed on The Wild About Lochaber website and The Walk Highlands website. Although these walks come with printable route summaries you may favour a printed guide book featuring many of these walks. Easy to keep in your rucksack or pocket and much less likely to get lost or crumpled than a printout from a website (assuming you have access to a printer when you are holiday). We feature a few guides below which we hope you will find useful and inspire you to explore and enjoy the wilds of Ardnamurchan by foot, bicycle and car.
