Fascadale to Port Eigin-aig Walk

The wee yellow road ends at Fascadale, where you can park and explore the small beach of follow the coastal footpath to Port Eigin-aig and onwards to the desserted village of Glendrian in the heart of the Ardnamurchan volcano.  The walk passes across moorland and is a little indistinct in places and can be pretty boggy too.  One for the more adventorous explorer though with good opportunities for spotting red deer, golden and white-tailed eagles.

A Walk from Ockle to the Singing Sands

There is a small parking area at the end of the road at Ockle.  From here you can explore some nearby archeological sites or take off on the coastal footpath towards The Singing Sands at Gortenfern. The walk passes through heathland with some stunning coastal and hill views, with particularly fine views to the Small Isles, Mull and Skye and is a stunning walk across a wild rugged terrain.

Kilmory Phone Box

Kilmory Beach

Kilmory beach is located by the small crofting township of Kilmory on the north coast of West Ardnamurchan. Kilmory beach is a lovely white sandy beach punctuated with volcanic outcrops. The beach is within a sheltered cove flanked by rocky promontories, with a small rocky islet (Ardtoe Island) on the east side of the bay. The beach affords some fine views of the Small Isles.

Cul na Croise

Cul na Croise is a beach noted for its wilderness quality and remoteness. It lies to the north east of Camas an Lighe and forms part of the Singing Sand coastline. This stunning beach with accompanying dune system, abuts coastal heath and semi natural birch and oak woodland. The dune ecosystem is also of high conservation importance and is a great place for botanising and wildlife watching (on both the sea and shore).

Please note that the beach and surrounding area was used for commando training during the Second World War and may contain unexploded munitions.

RSPB Glenborrodale

The RSPB reserve at Glenborrodale is located on the hills beside Loch Sunart and consists of Atlantic oak woodland, heath and bog. Over 130 birds have been reported within or in the vicinity of the reserve, including the coast and surrounding waters. These include merlin, redstart, skylark, tree pipit, spotted flycatcher, wheatear, whinchat and wood warbler. Look along the coastline of Loch Sunart for common sandpiper, turnstone, oystercatcher and white-tailed eagle.

There is a nature trail through the reserve and guided walks are available on Wednesday afternoon in season.

Swordle Bay Beach

Swordle Bay is a stunning bay on the northern shores of Ardnamurchan, located between the coastal headlands of Garbh Rubha and Ockle Point. There are some stunning views from the bay to the Small Isles, as well as some interesting geological formations and local archaeology.

Moidart History House

The Moidart History House is a small interpretation centre located next to the Glenuig Community shop on the A861 in Glenuig.  It was opened in 2011 and showcases some of the excellent work of the Moidart Local History Group.  Areas of interest include religion, archaeology, agriculture, education, culture, history, townships and places and place names.  The centre includes display boards on some of the projects carried out by the Local History Group, for example The High Mingarry Survey.  There is also a selection of books, pamphlets, files and leaflets on Moidart and t

Watch out for the elephants as you approach Glenuig, and make sure to take the diversion along the wee road to the beach at Samalaman. Step back in time and imagine yourself as a crofter with your spade amongst the rushes at the old crofting village of Smirisary and follow the path to the lovely The White Sands beyond. Make time for lunch at The Glenuig Inn, visit The Moidart History House, pop into shop for a friendly chat and ice cream, and make sure you take home some tasty locally smoked produce from the Glenuig Smokehouse.
